Swim club accused of racial discrimination against kids

Swim club accused of racial discrimination against kids. From Susan Candiotti and Jean Shin CNN. -- A Philadelphia-area day care center said Thursday that members of a private swim club made racist comments about the center's children, and the club then canceled their swimming privileges. The Creative Steps Day Care children -- ages kindergarten through seventh grade -- went to the Valley Swim Club in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, on June 29.The day center's director, Alethea Wright, had contracted to use the club once a week. During their first visit, some children said they heard club members asking why African-American children were there. One of the boys told the Philadelphia Inquirer that a woman at the club said she feared the children "might do something" to her child.Days later, the day care center's $1,950 check was returned without explanation, Wright said. The stepfather of one of the children was filing a complaint against the club with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, the panel's chairman, Stephen Glassman, said Thursday. Watch one of the children say what he heard at the swim club »The commission is investigating the allegations, spokeswoman Shannon Powers said, and will attempt to resolve the conflict out of court."Protests and public outcry won't do much to help these families, but the Human Relations Commission can determine the facts and hold people accountable for any illegal acts of discrimination," State NAACP President J. Whyatt Mondesire, who serves as a commission member, said in a press release.Sen. Arlen Specter's office said the Pennsylvania Democrat has sent a letter to the Valley Swim Club president asking him to reinstate the contract with Creative Steps, saying, "I think that you would agree that there is no place for racism in America today."On its Web site, the Valley Club disputed the allegations of racism."We had originally agreed to invite the camps to use our facility, knowing full well that the children from the camps were from multi-ethnic backgrounds," the statement said."Unfortunately, we quickly learned that we underestimated the capacity of our facilities and realized that we could not accommodate the number of children from these camps. All funds were returned to the camps and we will re-evaluate the issue at a later date to determine whether it can be feasible in the future."CNN attempted to speak with club President John Duesler on Thursday. He said he had no comment and asked CNN to leave the club property. But Duesler told two Philadelphia television stations that the children had changed "the complexion" and "atmosphere" of the club.Asmall group of protesters gathered in front of the club Thursday and said they think Duesler's statements prove that the club's action was racially motivated."I was hoping it wouldn't be something that was so blatantly apparent. I was hoping that it was overcrowding," one protester said. "When I read the statement by the club president, it made it blatant."Jim Flynn, who said he was one of the club members who made a complaint against the children, said it was not racially motivated."There were a lot of children in the pool and not enough lifeguards," he said. "As general members, we were not told that they were coming. If we knew, we could decide to not come when the pool was crowded or come anyway. We could have had an option."He said two other day-care centers, neither of which included minority children, had previously been similarly disinvited.A private Philadelphia boarding school said Thursday that it plans to help the day care center."We thought it was appalling what happened," said Girard College Admissions Director Tamara Leclair. She is meeting with the director of Creative Steps to sign a contract allowing the children to use Girard's facilities this summer, as early as Monday."We've had a wonderful response. I even received an e-mail from a woman in Florida telling us we did the right thing. "

Football: Ancelotti says Terry stays a Blue

Football: Ancelotti says Terry stays a Blue.. -- Carlo Ancelotti has been officially unveiled as the new Chelsea manager and immediately insisted that captain John Terry would be staying at Stamford Bridge.Weekend media reports suggested that the central defender was heading for Premier League rivals Manchester City, but the Italian was adamant about Terry's future."John Terry is a symbol of this team," he told CNN. "He will be captain next season. He said he wants to stay forever and we want to keep him for ever."Now there is a question of Manchester City, but for Terry (there is) no price."He said he wants to stay, there is no problem for him for us," added Ancelotti -- who spoke in English having had lessons since his move from the AC Milan hot seat.Ancelotti also revealed that the English FA Cup winners have signed left wing-back Yuri Zhirkov from CSKA Moscow.Zhirkov joins teenage striker Daniel Sturridge, who has arrived from Manchester City, as Chelsea acquisitions in the early transfer window trading. But Ancelotti refused to confirm Portuguese stars Deco and Ricardo Carvalho would be leaving Chelsea despite the pair being heavily linked with the Inter Milan of former boss Jose Mourinho. He said: "Carvalho and Deco are Chelsea players. If in the future a player wants to go they have to speak with the club and we take the right decision for the player and for us."Ancelotti, who has never worked outside of Italy, is the fifth Chelsea manager in two years. Guus Hiddink led the Blues to the semifinals of the Champions League and their FA Cup triumph during his spell in temporary charge after the departure of Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Colbert demands 'democracy in orbit' after winning poll

Colbert demands 'democracy in orbit' after winning poll.By Alan Duke CNN. -- Comedian and TV host Stephen Colbert has warned NASA to name a new wing of the international space station after him or he would "seize power as space's evil tyrant overlord."A NASA spokesman said the U.S. space agency is aware of Colbert's threat, issued Monday night on Comedy Central's "Colbert Report," but no decision will be made on the node's name until next week.Colbert topped NASA's online poll soliciting names for the wing, with 230,539 of the more than 1.1 million votes cast, according to NASA spokesman John Yembrick. The runner-up was Serenity, which Colbert said is not an appropriate name."That's not a space station," Colbert said. "That's an adult diaper."Serenity was the name of a spaceship in the television series "Firefly," which spawned a 2005 movie. The contest rules spelled out that NASA reserves the right to "ultimately select a name in accordance with the best interests of the agency. ... Such name may not necessarily be one which is on the list of voted-on candidate names."NASA's hedging prompted a Pennsylvania congressman to urge the agency to name the node after the comedian."The people have spoken, and Stephen Colbert won it fair and square, even if his campaign was a bit over the top," Rep. Chaka Fattah said.Fattah sits on the congressional committee that oversees NASA's funding."NASA, I urge you to heed Congressman Fattah's call for democracy in orbit," Colbert said. "Either name that node after me, or I, too, will reject democracy and seize power as space's evil tyrant overlord."NASA's Yembrick said he watched Colbert's show Monday, but he would not directly respond to his "evil tyrant overlord" threat."We think it's great that he and his audience are taking an interest," Yembrick said.Several media outlets have reported that NASA is working on a compromise in which it would slap the droll Colbert's name on a piece of "mission essential" equipment in the new wing: the toilet.Colbert's loyal fans, lovingly called the Colbert Nation, have in the past bombarded polls to have things named after their idol. Thanks to them, the comedian out-polled every other name in a bridge-naming contest in Hungary. The country's government later said it cannot name the bridge after him because he does not speak Hungarian and is not deceased.Colbert also tried to get himself on Democratic and Republican primary ballots in his home state of South Carolina in 2007. The Democratic Party's executive council voted against his inclusion, and he did not qualify for the Republican primary because he missed the deadline. But ice-cream maker Ben and Jerry named a flavor in honor of him, Colbert's AmeriCone Dream. And Virgin America named one of its planes Air Colbert.

I saw at the screen volatilely, around whom to see and nearly pushed credit note roles, precede with it. Assumption would be now a good time to precede for my area, huh? They do not have to go. They cannot remain for the night here, I worry. Possibly played my brain cheat on me, but it sounded nearly, as if it tempts me, in order to remain. Reliably it did not mean that which I thought, did her. It was years, since we slept together in same bed, let alone the same area been. Before I could say another word, she got her right palm to my left cheek and covered my lips with their thumb. I became cement in their hands. How over give me to you a Massage? Ashley flashed I a breath-taking smile. It seems like you can use. I nodded mutely mean head in the agreement, uncertain, if she were really serious over their offer. Our night activities had been in most cases fully automatic, and me a Massage to give a very large leap would be in the Intimität. Ashley forced itself away I and schubste my ribs. I blunt stretch on my box and crossed my arms under the cushion, around my head to swings.

Do you refuse to help my best friend when it has troubles? Wait one minute, I will still ask him

Do you refuse to help my best friend when it has troubles? Wait one minute, I will still ask him. LISA returned after one minute of silence and said, Robin discovered that Anna had a business and trichee him. I answered, which bitch without scruple. My answer is always not. I will never accept any whore of fraud in my house, never in the hell. LISA obtained angry and shouted, it is too my house and if Anna must go to a hotel then I am matched with it. You do not worry if I do that? I hate to cheat of the sluts and I will never help rotten a slut which cheated her husband, period. LISA hung to the top the telephone. This call must have given him a bad feeling about what would arrive at it if or when I discovered about his own fraud.

Federer cuts clay-court schedule in 2009

Federer cuts clay-court schedule in 2009.BASEL, Switzerland (AP) -- Roger Federer will play only two clay-court tournaments in 2009 before the French Open, the only grand slam tournament he has never won.Federer will head to Paris on May 24 after playing Masters series events on his least favorite surface in Rome and Madrid, according to a schedule published on his official Web site.Federer played four clay-court events this year ahead of the French Open -- Estoril, Portugal; Monte Carlo; Rome; and Hamburg, Germany. He lost to Rafael Nadal in the French Open final."I am really pleased with the season the way we have planned it and I am looking forward to an exciting year," Federer said.Federer had a tough 2008 season marred by illness and a back injury. He surrendered his Wimbledon title and No. 1 ranking to Nadal, but won the U.S. Open for his 13th grand slam title, one short of Pete Sampras' all-time record.Federer's agent, Tony Godsick, told The Associated Press in October that the Swiss star would play a 2009 schedule "that works for him physically.""He is not going to overplay next year," Godsick said. "He is just going to try to make sure that he peaks for the tournaments that mean the most to him."Federer has won five U.S. Opens, five Wimbledons and three Australian Opens but never captured the French, where he has lost to Nadal in the final for three straight years.Federer will start the year on hard courts at an invitation tournament in Abu Dhabi then play events at Doha, Qatar, and Kooyong, Australia, before the Australian Open starts January 19 in Melbourne. His grass-court schedule is unchanged with a single warm-up for Wimbledon, at Halle, Germany.Federer will defend his U.S. Open title from August 31 after playing Masters events on hard courts at Montreal and Cincinnati.

Suspected U.S. missile kills 3 in Pakistan.ISLAMABAD, Pakistan . -- A suspected U.S. missile from an unmanned drone killed three people Saturday in Pakistan's tribal region, according to a Pakistani military source and a North Waziristan official. The strike hit a village near Miran Shah, in North Waziristan, the military source and Muhammad Nasim, a North Waziristan political official, said. The military source asked not to be identified because he is not authorized to speak to the media. This is the latest in a series of deadly missile strikes in Pakistan's border region over the past two months. Pakistan has repeatedly blamed the United States and condemned the strikes, saying they cost lives, violate the nation's sovereignty and undermine public support for its counterterrorism efforts. The U.S. government has not acknowledged hitting targets within Pakistan, an ally in the war on al Qaeda launched after the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington. The U.S-led coalition and NATO -- based in Afghanistan -- have been seeking a way to effectively battle Taliban and al Qaeda militants who they believe are launching attacks from Pakistan's swath of tribal areas along the border. They have become frustrated with Islamabad over the years, saying it is not being active enough against militants -- a claim Pakistan denies.A week ago Saturday, two missiles, also believed fired by a U.S. Predator drone, hit a house in the North Waziristan region and killed at least four people and wounded six others, a local official said.North Waziristan is one of seven districts within Pakistan's ungoverned tribal region along the Afghanistan border.Pakistan's Foreign Ministry recently has summoned U.S. Ambassador Anne Patterson to lodge formal protests. On November 20, the ministry lodged a protest with Patterson against a strike in the Bannu region of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province that left five dead and seven wounded and was deeper inside Pakistani territory than previous attacks. In October, the Foreign Ministry summoned Patterson and said strikes should be stopped immediately. At the time, a missile strike from a suspected U.S. drone on a compound in South Waziristan killed 20 people. The United States is the only country operating in the region known have the capability to launch missiles from drones, which are controlled remotely.

It must make rather well, I thought, finding a house for itself with a swimming pool

It must make rather well, I thought, finding a house for itself with a swimming pool. It gave me an idea. I decided to go inside, excusing myself for a shower, but in the place I found it perfect a time to pass by the businesses of Fiona. I entered his room and started with snoop around. Its part was ordered and arranges, unlike mine which resembled a warzone. I found his purse and excavated. It had a decent quantity of money thus cash I helped itself, sticking it in my black thin strap like a fish knife. There was a nice perfume inside here and I detected the odor of dear perfume. Its planer had a small box of jewels with charm which I opened… and almost disappeared.

It was abundance long enough however to satisfy its in love. It carefully pushed it in the she-cat of Susan, to let it slacken and extended before going further. Centimetre per centimetre it went, its arms drawing Susan downwards on its face more and more. Soon, if Susan wanted, it could let go from the bedhead. Susan not, however. It was not how she liked it. It knew what it wanted, and to obtain it. Lilah had that, had learned quickly how to satisfy its true love. The girl kept her grease of language but Susan hard and left to make the things which it had to make. Through, Susan grinded its body. She raised herself with her strong thighs and calves, the softness of her curved body a lie which hid a certain true force. She formatted of cup her own centres, liking the full one to feel her D in her hands. She gripped above the nipples, eyes closed while she assembled her in love silently.

Every day is a holiday for Yo-Yo Ma

Every day is a holiday for Yo-Yo Ma.By Shanon Cook CNNNEW YORK . -- When Yo-Yo Ma enters a room, everything changes. His energy and warmth (he hugs everyone in sight) and curiosity (for every question you ask him, he asks two of you) envelop you like a blanket. He's also surprisingly funny. The world's most celebrated cellist introduces himself not as Yo-Yo, or Mr. Ma, or even Yo Mama (as you might expect from a wisenheimer). Instead, with a hint of mischief and a nod to the everyman celebrity of campaign '08, he offers, "I'm Joe the cellist."He adds, "I get the 'plumb' jobs."He might be right. Consider Ma's latest album, "Songs of Joy and Peace" (Sony), the first holiday-themed release of his career. Ma describes it as a musical party, a collection of good-time collaborations with musical buddies, James Taylor and Diana Krall among them. Watch Yo-Yo Ma enjoy time with his friends »"I asked everybody to bring their favorite piece of music that signified joy to them," Ma said. "And out came all of these fantastic pieces. Many of them I didn't know."Krall applies her mellow voice and piano playing to the lighthearted "You Couldn't be Cuter." Ma joined Taylor in Taylor's Washington, Massachusetts, barn to record George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun." Other guests include vocalists Alison Krauss and Renee Fleming, trumpeter Chris Botti and saxophonist Joshua Redman.Ma also enlists help from friends who are less mainstream such as the green-haired Galician bagpiper Cristina Pato and mandolin player Chris Thiele. Jake Shimabukuro's ukulele provides a delightfully plucky counterpoint to Ma's soaring cello on the John Lennon/Yoko Ono hit "Happy Xmas (War is Over)."Born in Paris to Chinese parents and raised in New York, Ma, 53, is no stranger to thinking outside the music box. In 1998 he founded the Silk Road Project, a multi-cultural exchange designed to help artists and musicians share ideas across borders. His international efforts have earned him the title of United Nations Messenger of Peace. And to Ma, his extensive travels have earned him comparison to a certain shifty-footed children's book character."As a musician I'm kind of nomadic, Waldo-like," he says. "I show up in different places, and I'm witness to unbelievable things."CNN caught up with Ma at Legacy Studios in New York where some of the recording took place for "Songs of Joy and Peace." The following is an edited version of that interview.CNN: One of the things that's apparent from watching the footage of the studio sessions from this album is that everyone is so humbled to work with you, and you are just as humbled to work with them.Yo-Yo Ma: Well, I think what I loved about the sessions was that there was mutuality, if that's a word, of just being open and wanting to do the best thing possible. And so I think everybody just came with an open heart and open mind. ... The amount of talent that walked through the room was staggering for me. Day after day I thought I could die and go to heaven. ... Every day was like that. So I feel very, very, very lucky and very grateful to my friends.CNN: With the work you do, particularly with the Silk Road Project, you've really had to relax the rules of classical music. Has that been difficult?Ma: There's a part of me that's always charging ahead. I'm the curious kid, always going to the edge. But I have such deep love for the domain that I come from, whether you call it classical music or ... I don't know what you call it these days because it's no longer really definable. It's coming from a lot of places.Yes, you're right, I had to relax. It was scary. And I think the idea of transcending fear and transcending technique or understanding different frames is part of the adventure. Something's scary until you make it familiar and comfortable. I feel so much more a member of the planet community after doing this work for 10 years, because I feel like you can drop me most places and I'll be OK. I'll find out what's going on and find a way to participate.CNN: You're a big believer in the idea that music is this big unifying force in the world. What other common languages have you come across?Ma: Oh my goodness. I think there are so many basic ways of behaving that we all have. Guest-host relations ... there's no culture that doesn't have that. And there's almost no culture where there are not stories where people take in strangers. Gift giving is another act that is universal. Certainly caring for one's group, a tribal mentality. Sometimes it means putting up firewalls because it's dangerous to mingle. But in today's world it seems like we have different groupings. [We seem to have] a younger generation that actually is much more tribe-blind or they've created their own social communities. So it's interesting to live in today's world and observe how within urban or rural areas people's habits may be changing. And I think culturally speaking I'm trying to work in such a way that we can actually find more commonality than the differences, especially because often things happen so quickly.CNN: Can you ever remember a moment in your life when you felt bored?Ma: Yes. I hated that feeling so much. I think we all remember when we were much younger, how slowly time [goes]. And I think those years often were very boring years. When is summer going to come? When is Christmas going to come? Never! But I think I decided or thought about how I really would love to have an interesting life. I really would like to be involved in things and to understand things, and in some ways you've got to be careful what you wish for because I feel very, very blessed to have such an interesting life and to be able to have little snapshots of lives of people from many different parts of the world.CNN: What do you do to relax?Ma: Because so much of what I do involves people, being in a place with more trees than people immediately takes me down. I live in Cambridge [Massachusetts] and so when we go to western Massachusetts and see the mountains and trees, suddenly I'm totally relaxed and feel fabulous.
